Freddie Combs, whose soaring voice made him a fan favorite on television\u2019s\u00a0The X Factor\u00a0<\/em>music competition, has died at age 49. He died Sept. 10 at a Florida hospital from kidney failure, his wife, Kay, said.<\/p>\n

Combs was a minister and performed in a wheelchair on\u00a0The X Factor.\u00a0<\/em>He battled health problems for years, and his wife told that he weighed as much as 920 pounds in 2009. He was featured in 2010 on the TLC series\u00a0Ton of Love<\/em>\u00a0and managed to get his weight down to a relatively svelte 540 lbs., which is where he was at when he appeared on the second season of Simon Cowell\u2019s\u00a0The X Factor\u00a0<\/em>in the U.S.<\/p>\n

In his appearance, Combs\u2019 version of Bette Midler\u2019s \u201cWind Beneath My Wings\u201d made him stand out, and judges Cowell and L.A. Reid gave him their word they\u2019d support him if he got healthier.<\/p>\n

He soon\u00a0was eliminated from the competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have so much gratitude to be his wife for 25 years,\u201d Kay Combs said, \u201cand to be his best friend.\u201d<\/p>\n
