And I can definitely see him making it to the end.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent preview clip of the upcoming season of\u00a0<em>American Idol,\u00a0<\/em>fans got to meet Slater Nalley. Rather than opting for a cover song, Nalley surprised the judges with an original tune titled \u201cTraces Of You\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nalley hit the<em>\u00a0American Idol\u00a0<\/em>audition stage accompanied by his high school English teacher, who went only by Mrs. Davis. It was odd at first, but everything started to make sense when Mrs. Davis herself introduced Nalley and told\u00a0Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie the young man\u2019s story\u2026 as well as the story of her own late son.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-american-idol-contestant-slater-nalley-had-the-judges-in-tears\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018American Idol\u2019 Contestant Slater Nalley Had The Judges in Tears<\/h3>\n<p>According to Mrs. Davis, her son, Carter Davis, passed away nearly a decade ago. Nalley wrote \u201cTraces Of You\u201d as a tribute to Davis\u2019 late son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a special student of mine, Slater Nalley, and he wrote a song for my son who was killed eight years ago,\u201d said Mrs. Davis in the clip. \u201cSlater had heard the story about my son. [\u2026] I had written a poem and the second year that I taught him I asked, \u2018Would you mind looking at the poem? I would love to see what your thoughts are and how you turn a poem into a song.\u2019 And so, two weeks later, he did, and that\u2019s the song he\u2019s going to sing today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nalley, acoustic guitar at the ready, said that it was \u201cthe most deep thing I have ever written\u201d and that he did not know Carter before his teacher had told her students about him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just felt this presence come into my life essentially and I knew I needed to do something,\u201d said Nalley.<\/p>\n<p>Nalley then jumped into his performance, and it was an arresting and gorgeous rendition of the original song. Carrie Underwood, in particular, was weeping by the end of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t imagine you doing that any better,\u201d said Underwood.<\/p>\n<p>Lionel Richie was also quite moved by the performance, noting that the way Nalley sang the song was akin to the blues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just stick to walking on stage and singing with your heart, and the rest will take care of itself,\u201d said Bryan.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the upcoming season of American Idol, Slater Nalley\u2019s tribute and all, via ABC on March 9, 2025.
