Powassan virus is rare but increasingly reported, with 54 cases in the U.S. in 2024\u201412 of them in Massachusetts. With no vaccine or treatment, prevention is critical.<\/p>\n
Health experts recommend protective clothing, staying on clear trails, and using insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or permethrin. Light-colored clothes make ticks easier to spot, and checking for ticks after being outdoors can reduce the risk of infection. Removing ticks promptly with tweezers and washing clothes in hot water are also advised.<\/p>\n
