Belmont University Student Remembers His Late Father In Emotional Audition For\u00a0American Idol<\/em><\/h2>\n

When Freddie McClendon auditioned for Season 23 of\u00a0American Idol<\/em>,\u00a0he brought the judges to tears with a song about his late father, Davis McClendon.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0TV Insider\u00a0<\/em>reports, Davis\u2019 body was found next to his wrecked car at 1 AM on May 7, 2023. Davis had been on a date with his girlfriend, Meredith, shortly before he was killed.<\/p>\n

Upon examining the evidence, authorities came to the conclusion Meredith\u2019s estranged husband, Bud Ackerman, intentionally struck and killed Davis. Bud eventually went to trial, and after six days of testimony, the jury found him guilty of the crime. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison.<\/p>\n

Davis\u2019 death became a nationwide story and was the subject of a\u00a048 Hours<\/em>\u00a0episode. True crime junkies found themselves invested in every detail surrounding his case.<\/p>\n

After his dad\u2019s case gained so much notoriety, Freddie made it his mission to \u201ctell the story of his life.<\/em>\u201c<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was something so much bigger than just the true crime story of the week\u2026he was our dad,<\/em>\u201d he said in his introduction before his\u00a0Idol<\/em>\u00a0audition.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Freddie McClendon Moves\u00a0Idol<\/em>\u00a0Judges To Tears With Powerful Song About His Father<\/h3>\n

Now 19, Freddie is a student at\u00a0Nashville\u2018s prestigious Belmont University. He recalled visiting \u201cMusic City\u201d with his father years ago, who fully believed in Freddie\u2019s musical talents.<\/p>\n

After Davis died, Freddie wrote a song in his memory titled \u201cYou Never Loved Him.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0He played that song for\u00a0Idol<\/em>\u00a0judges\u00a0Carrie Underwood,\u00a0Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie.<\/p>\n

The judges appeared mesmerized as Freddie performed the heart-wrenching song about his father\u2019s life\u2026and the person who took it from him. They were all holding back tears as Freddie sang:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never got to see him one last time. We never got to tell him goodbye. We never got the chance to even try\u2026to warn him that you had lost your mind.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Emotions reached an all-time high after Freddie finished the song. Lionel took a deep breath, and Carrie asked for a \u201csec\u201d as she grabbed some tissues.<\/p>\n

Pulling herself together but still fighting through her emotions, Carrie said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThank you sir, for bringing that and sharing your heart. It\u2019s so brave of you to decide that you want to choose the narrative, that you want to remember him\u2014him<\/strong>\u2014not what happened, but\u00a0him<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Lionel doubled down on Carrie\u2019s comments. He told Freddie, \u201cYou were able to translate that emotion, that feeling, to the point where you moved people<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

All three judges\u00a0also agreed they loved the sound of Freddie\u2019s \u201ccool<\/em>\u201d and \u201cthrowback<\/em>\u201d voice, comparing him to Paul Simon.<\/p>\n

Before they gave Freddie their vote, they asked him to bring his family into the audition room. His mom and two sisters cried as the judges each gave him a \u201cyes\u201d vote\u2014and a Golden Ticket to Hollywood!<\/p>\n
