Carnie Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0recalled the \u201ctremendous\u201d gift of following in her father\u00a0Brian Wilson<\/strong>\u2019s musical footsteps prior to his death.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s kind of unavoidable. Music is in our blood,\u201d Carnie, 57, exclusively told\u00a0Us Weekly<\/em>\u00a0in April 2024, while reflecting on her path to singing one year before Brian died on Wednesday, June 11, at the age of 82.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Carnie is the\u00a0eldest daughter of Brian\u00a0and his first wife,\u00a0Marilyn Rovell<\/strong>. Like her father, who was a founding member of The Beach Boys, Carnie is a musician \u2014 and now, her eldest daughter Lola, 20, is following suit. According to Carnie, they all have Brian to thank for their talent.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo sing with my dad,\u00a0to sing with Lola\u00a0and then all of us singing together [is great],\u201d Carnie recalled to\u00a0Us<\/em>. \u201cOver Easter, we were singing some Beach Boy songs for him, for my dad, and he couldn\u2019t get over it. I said, \u2018Dad, Lola\u2019s voice.\u2019 He said, \u2018She\u2019s great. She\u2019s great.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Carnie, who is\u00a0one third of the musical group\u00a0Wilson Phillips alongside her sister\u00a0Wendy Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0and friend\u00a0Chynna Phillips<\/strong>, noted that her vocal skills come from her dad, but her mom\u2019s side is where she gets her cooking talent. That love of food, however, is something she also shared with her dad.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe loves when I cook for him,\u201d Carnie told\u00a0Us<\/em>, sharing that the \u201cGood Vibrations\u201d singer was a fan of her mac and cheese and key lime cheesecakes, not to mention steak. \u201cThat my dad loves.\u201d<\/p>\n

Food, family and music have always been core values for the Wilson family, and according to Carnie that included sing-alongs at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe love to sing \u2018Surfer Girl\u2019 and \u2018In My Room.\u2019 Sometimes a little \u2018California Girls,\u2019 [which is] his favorite, and sometimes we do \u2018Be My Baby,\u2019 his favorite song ever by The Ronettes,\u201d Carnie said of her and Brian\u2019s go-to tunes. \u201cI like to sing his songs to him. I think they mean a lot to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

She gushed, \u201cHe also loves Wilson Phillips. He really does good. He\u2019s always asking me, \u2018How\u2019s Wilson Phillips?\u2019 I go, \u2018We\u2019re great, dad.\u2019 He\u2019s funny. He\u2019s very proud.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before his passing, Carnie remembered living it up with her father and the rest of their family despite his declining health. (The family requested a conservatorship over Brian\u2019s person in February 2024, revealing at the time that he suffered from a \u201cmajor neurocognitive disorder such as dementia.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s good. He\u2019s very well cared for. And his spirits are good,\u201d she said in April 2024, noting that after his wife\u00a0Melinda Kae Ledbetter<\/strong>\u2019s death in January that same year it was \u201chard,\u201d but he wasn\u2019t alone.<\/p>\n

Carnie told\u00a0Us\u00a0<\/em>at the time, \u201cHis family is around him. His kids are around him. And he went to the Laker game. We\u2019re going to go see the Dodgers. He wants to go to plays. He wants to go to Musa and Frank\u2019s on Hollywood Boulevard and eat their famous thousand island dressing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Wilson family confirmed on Wednesday that Brian had died. \u201cWe are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away,\u201d his loved ones wrote in a statement shared via Facebook. \u201cWe are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian was best known for forming The Beach Boys in 1961 alongside his brothers,\u00a0Dennis<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Carl Wilson<\/strong>, cousin\u00a0Mike Love<\/strong>\u00a0and high school friend\u00a0Al Jardine<\/strong>. The group released chart-topping hits for a decade before they took a break. Brian revived his career in the mid-90s with a successful solo journey and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Beach Boys in 1988.<\/p>\n

Brian is survived by daughters Carnie and Wendy, 55, and his and Ledbetter\u2019s five adopted children,\u00a0Dakota<\/strong>,\u00a0Daria<\/strong>,\u00a0Delanie<\/strong>,\u00a0Dylan<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Dash,\u00a0<\/strong>who have opted to stay out of the limelight.
