I\u2019d only asked my brother Jamie to watch her for a few hours. The sitter canceled, and he swore he was sober now. I wanted to believe him\u2014maybe I needed to. But as I moved through the house, panic set in. Her stuffed bunny was gone. Her room was messy. No signs of life.<\/p>\n

I called his phone\u2014voicemail. Again. Nothing. My heart pounded as I screamed into the receiver, terrified. Then I heard keys at the door and ran downstairs. Jamie stood there, holding Lila wrapped in a blanket, limp and flushed. My breath caught\u2014was she asleep? Or worse? I demanded answers, bracing for betrayal.<\/p>\n
