Julian Ryan\u2019s final words to his mother as floodwaters quickly engulfed their trailer home were simply, \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He had made a split-second decision to thrust his arm through a window to help his fianc\u00e9e, two young kids and mom escape the catastrophic flood tearing through Kerr County, Texas, swallowing everything in its path.<\/p>\n

That last-ditch effort, an act of bravery, ultimately cost him his life. The glass had cut an artery in his arm.<\/p>\n

Ryan\u2019s mother held him as he bled and took his last breath, his sister, Connie Salas, told CNN.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe went out a hero,\u201d Salas said.<\/p>\n

In the pitch-black, storm-lashed hours before dawn Friday, surging floodwaters unexpectedly ravaged the region, including a campsite filled with sleeping children. Four months\u2019 worth of rain fell in just hours and the nearby Guadalupe River rose over 20 feet, sweeping homes, cars, campers and cabins downstream.<\/p>\n

When the sunrise came and the storm softened, the full weight of the disaster came into view. Hundreds were missing, including over two dozen girls at a summer camp, and as minutes stretched into hours, then days, hope gave way to grief.<\/p>\n

At least 120 people, including more than 35 children,\u00a0were killed in the catastrophic Texas floods\u00a0and the death toll continues to rise, according to local officials. Ryan\u2019s body wasn\u2019t recovered until waters receded, according to\u00a0CNN affiliate KHOU.<\/p>\n

Now Ryan\u2019s family and their heartbroken Texas community are reckoning with the depth of the tragedy \u2014 and searching for answers.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what we know about the victims.<\/p>\n

A father of two and his final heroic act<\/h2>\n

It had been an exhausting shift for Ryan. The 27-year-old dishwasher had finished working at a local restaurant before returning to his Ingram, Texas, home, The New York Times reported.<\/p>\n

He was finally asleep when surging floodwaters crashed through their trailer home.<\/p>\n

In a matter of seconds, their front door gave way, slammed open by the power of the river. Ryan and his fianc\u00e9e, with water rising to their chests, placed their 13-month-old and 6-year-old on the mattresses, which were floating, to keep them above the rising flood.<\/p>\n

But the water kept rising. The bedroom door, sealed tight by the pressure on the other side, wouldn\u2019t budge.<\/p>\n

In those terrifying moments, Ryan shattered a window in a final attempt to get his family out. The glass tore into his arm, leaving him critically injured, his fianc\u00e9e Christinia Wilson said.<\/p>\n

She added the glass almost cut his arm clean off.<\/p>\n

After multiple calls to 911 went unanswered, Ryan looked at them, she said, and told them, \u201c\u2018I\u2019m sorry, I\u2019m not going to make it. I love y\u2019all.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

His sister, who lived just steps away from him and also lost her home, told CNN there was no warning and no time to act. A flash flood emergency warning was issued for Kerr County at 4:03 a.m. about an hour before the raging Guadalupe River burst from its banks. The late-night warnings limited who could see them \u2013 and how quickly they could move to higher ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had no time to physically save ourselves,\u201d Salas said. \u201cOur last words were, \u2018I\u2019m scared,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cAnd he says, \u2018Me too.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The family is overwhelmed with grief and struggling to cope, Salas says, especially their mother, who was there for Ryan\u2019s final moments and saw him take his last breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile they were literally panicking and about to drown, my mother was still holding up her son and he looked at her and said, \u2018I love you,\u2019\u201d Salas said. \u201cSo my mom has that heartbreak of looking at her son and telling him goodbye, holding him while he takes his last breath.\u201d<\/p>\n

Salas says the family feels like they\u2019re trapped in a nightmare they can\u2019t wake up from; a reality where Ryan will never walk through the door again \u201cand be that funny person he is.\u201d<\/p>\n

At\u00a0Camp Mystic, a Christian all-girls camp along the banks of the Guadalupe River that hosts about 750 kids, the massive flooding seemed to have ripped the wall off at least one building and left a cabin covered in dirt and mud, with girls\u2019 mattresses strewn across the floor, photos of the devastation show. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the camp was \u201chorrendously ravaged.\u201d He was shocked, he said, that the rushing water reached the top of the cabins.<\/p>\n

A total of 27 campers and counselors are dead, the camp announced Monday. Five campers and one counselor who were at the facility are still missing, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said.<\/p>\n

The camp\u2019s longtime director and co-owner, Dick Eastland, died while trying to rescue campers, his grandson said Saturday. A Camp Mystic employee, Glenn Juenke, told CNN that Eastland died \u201cremaining a true hero until the very end.\u201d<\/p>\n

The families of several campers confirmed their children are among the victims. Hadley Hanna, described by her mother as the \u201cmost joyful, happy kid with a smile on her face,\u201d was one of the young lives lost. A family spokesperson asked for \u201cprivacy and prayers\u201d for the family of the 8-year-old.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur families are experiencing unimaginable grief. We are reaching out with a heartfelt request for privacy and compassion,\u201d the family said in a statement to CNN Monday. \u201cWe appreciate your empathy, your prayers, and understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

Virginia Wynne Naylor, another 8-year-old camper at Camp Mystic, was also among those who died in the flood, her father Cole Naylor said in a statement to CNN.<\/p>\n

Virginia had a \u201cgreat love of the outdoors, a love of God, and love for her community,\u201d her father wrote.<\/p>\n

A foundation has been set up in partnership with the Dallas Foundation to honor Virginia\u2019s life. The foundation will help the local education system, youth wildlife conservation efforts and select Christian ministries, Cole Naylor said.<\/p>\n

Derek Klein, a spokesperson with the foundation, said Virginia was staying at the camp\u2019s Bubble Inn cabin when the flood hit.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you remove the grief, the stress, the tears of despair and the cries of horror from the days since this tragedy began, you will find how God intends for us to live,\u201d Cole Naylor said in the statement. \u201cReplace grief with hope. Replace stress with servitude. Replace tears of despair with joyful recollection. \u2026 This is how our girls danced through this world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another Mystic camper, Mary Barrett Stevens, was \u201cfearless,\u201d \u201centhusiastic\u201d and \u201ccompassionate,\u201d her mother Stacy Stevens said in a statement shared by a family spokesperson on social media and obtained by CNN affiliate KVUE.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m the luckiest that I got to be your mom and I will never stop loving you and trying to live life as you did,\u201d Stevens said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur world is shattered but I have peace getting your letters and knowing you were having the time of your life at camp and had a dance party with all of your friends before the Lord decided to take you from us,\u201d she added. \u201cHe has bigger plans for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s truly devastating,\u201d Shawn Salta, Smajstrla\u2019s uncle, told CNN.<\/p>\n

In a post on\u00a0Facebook, Alabama Sen. Katie Britt said she was \u201cheartbroken\u201d over the loss of Sarah Marsh.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are keeping her family in our thoughts and prayers during this unimaginable time,\u201d Britt said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the midst of our unimaginable grief, we ask for privacy and are unable to confirm any details at this time,\u201d the Bonner family said in a statement. \u201cWe ache with all who loved her and are praying endlessly for others to be spared from this tragic loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

2 young sisters who had a close bond<\/h2>\n

On the night they died, 13-year-old and 11-year-old sisters Blair and Brooke Harber went to the loft of their cabin holding their rosaries \u2013 a string of beads used by Catholics to count prayers.<\/p>\n

The next morning, their bodies were found together 15 miles downriver,\u00a0according to a statement from St. Rita Catholic School, where the girls were set to begin 6th and 8th grade this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven in their last moments, they held tightly to each other, a powerful symbol of their lasting bond and their trust in God,\u201d the school said in the statement.<\/p>\n

Blair and Brooke had been staying with their grandparents along the Guadalupe River when the tragedy unfolded. Their grandparents remain missing while their parents, who were staying in a separate cabin, survived, the school\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n

The sisters\u2019 father, RJ Harber, confirmed their deaths to CNN on Saturday. He said he believes his missing parents Charlene and Mike Harber are also deceased.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Blair) was a gifted student and had a generous kind heart,\u201d RJ Harber said. \u201c(Brooke) was like a light in any room, people gravitated to her and she made them laugh and enjoy the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The school described Blair as an \u201coutstanding student\u201d with \u201cthe kindest heart and loved to serve others.\u201d She played volleyball, basketball, lacrosse and was a member of the cheerleading team, yearbook staff and speech and drama program.<\/p>\n

Brooke, the school said, \u201cwas an excellent student who brought joy and energy wherever she went.\u201d She played soccer, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse and had a special gift for improv.<\/p>\n

Blair and Brooke\u2019s mother, Annie Harber, is a faculty member at St. Rita Catholic School.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Harber family has been a cherished part of our parish and school community for many years,\u201d the school said. \u201cThis tragedy has touched every corner of our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n

A girls camp director who loved to sing<\/h2>\n

Jane Ragsdale was the \u201cheart and soul\u201d of Heart O\u2019 the Hills, another all-girls camp in Hunt, Texas, according to the camp\u2019s website.<\/p>\n

The co-owner and camp director, Ragsdale died during the floods. She had \u201cinfluenced countless lives and was the definition of strong and powerful,\u201d the camp said.<\/p>\n

The camp, set alongside the Guadalupe River, was not in session at the time of the flooding, and \u201cmost of those who were on camp at the time have been accounted for and are on high ground,\u201d according to an\u00a0announcement\u00a0from the camp.<\/p>\n

A video last month shows Ragsdale playing the guitar and singing with campers. She sings the song \u201cLet There Always Be A Song\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you sing you say, life is good today,\u201d she sings. \u201cSo keep singing till we meet again.\u201d<\/p>\n

A high school soccer coach and his wife<\/h2>\n

Reece Zunker was not just a soccer coach. The head coach of the Tivy High School\u2019s boys soccer team was \u201ca mentor, teacher and a role model,\u201d the team said on Facebook.<\/p>\n

They added they were mourning \u201cthe loss of our leader and inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zunker died in the holiday weekend\u2019s flooding tragedy, his niece told CNN. Mackenzey Zunker said her father identified her uncle\u2019s body Saturday evening.<\/p>\n

Paula Zunker, Reece\u2019s wife, also died, according to the soccer team\u2019s statement and\u00a0a post\u00a0by Recce Zunker\u2019s cousin, Haley Furlough.<\/p>\n

The couple\u2019s two children remain unaccounted for, Furlough wrote.<\/p>\n

A loving grandmother who helped foster care children<\/h2>\n

Eads assisted children in the foster care system in her early career and continued on as a psychologist and a college professor, her daughter told CNN.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrying to figure out our lives without her is a possibility we never planned to face and we will always miss her.\u201d<\/p>\n

A doting grandmother who loved the river<\/h2>\n

Holly Frizzell, who died in the flood, had a personality that was \u201clarger than life-magnetic, warm, and unforgettable,\u201d her family wrote\u00a0in an obituary posted by Hamil Funeral Home.<\/p>\n

Frizzell, 72, had a home in Casa Bonita and loved the Guadalupe River where she found \u201cpeace, joy, and reflection,\u201d the obituary said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was where she laughed with her family and friends, made memories with her grandchildren, and sat quietly by the river,\u201d the family wrote.<\/p>\n

Frizzell lost her husband, who had been diagnosed with dementia, in 2015. After his death, she became an advocate for people battling dementia and Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Frizzell\u2019s grandchildren were \u201cthe center of her universe,\u201d her obituary said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will all miss her more than words can express and cherish the gift of having been loved by her,\u201d the family said.<\/p>\n

A Camp Mystic counselor and mentor<\/h2>\n

Chloe Childress, a 19-year-old counselor at Camp Mystic and recent high school graduate, was killed during the catastrophic flooding in Kerr County, Texas, her family confirmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur family was shocked to hear of the horrific tragic flooding in the Hill Country, and we were devastated to learn that our precious Chloe was among the victims,\u201d the family said in a statement shared with\u00a0CNN\u00a0affiliate\u00a0KHOU.<\/p>\n

Childress recently graduated from The Kinkaid School in Houston,\u00a0according to CNN affiliate KTRK, and was spending her summer mentoring young girls at Camp Mystic. She was set to attend college at the University of Texas at Austin,\u00a0KTRK reported.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Eades, head of The Kinkaid School, remembered Childress as someone with the ability to connect with others.<\/p>\n

\u201cChloe had a remarkable way of making people feel seen,\u201d Eades said in a statement with KTRK. \u201cShe was wise beyond her years, with a steady compassion that settled a room\u2026She lost her life upholding this selfless and fierce commitment to others.\u201d<\/p>\n

An Army veteran who loved to help others<\/h2>\n

Bill Venus, a retired, 33-year Army veteran who was missing after the devastating Texas flooding, has been found dead, his son told CNN.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a great man. I can\u2019t hold a candle to his accomplishments, but his primary goal was helping others, and I\u2019ll do that every opportunity I have,\u201d his son Will Venus Jr. wrote in a text message.<\/p>\n

In an earlier post on Facebook, Venus said his father\u2019s car was found flipped in Burnet, Texas, which is about 55 miles northwest of Austin, but he was not inside.<\/p>\n

A toddler celebrating July Fourth<\/h2>\n

A 20-month-old boy from Austin died after floodwaters from the Guadalupe River overtook his family\u2019s home, a family member told the\u00a0Austin American-Statesman\u00a0on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The family came together at their riverfront home near Ingram in Kerr County to celebrate the Fourth of July when flash flooding inundated the home on Friday, the newspaper said.<\/p>\n
