A doctor claims they tried to save the life of actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner prior to his tragic death via drowning at 54 on Sunday in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n
The doctor, who did not want to be identified by name, told\u00a0Us Weekly\u00a0Thursday, \u2018I was about 200 meters from the incident, at Playa Grande, spending the day on vacation with my partner.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018There were very few people on the beach, and the sea was rough.\u2019<\/p>\n
The doctor said they\u00a0rushed to the area The Cosby Show actor was at<\/span>, upon hearing a hubbub.<\/p>\n
\u2018I ran to the area and entered the sea with my surfboard, heading into the rip current toward the person being pointed at by some beachgoers,\u2019 the doctor told the outlet. \u2018After a few minutes, I saw a shadow, dove down and pulled the person out.\u2019<\/p>\n

Costa Rica Atlantic region Tourist Police head Elberth Le\u00f3n told the outlet that a pair of males were tended to at the scene,\u00a0including the beloved actor<\/span>, who portrayed Theo Huxtable on the 1980s smash hit.<\/p>\n

\u2018Immediately, [first responders] began providing first aid to Malcolm, but he had no vital signs,\u2019 Le\u00f3n told the outlet. \u2018Two tourists ran over to help.<\/p>\n
\u2018They identified themselves as doctors, making a total of three physicians at the scene.\u2019<\/p>\n
The other person was\u00a0transported to a nearby medical facility in critical condition<\/span>, and was subsequently released.<\/p>\n
Le\u00f3n told the outlet that Warner and his eight-year-old daughter had been ensnared in a rip current at Playa Cocles in the Limon province.<\/p>\n
A nearby Good Samaritan helped rescue the child back to shore, Le\u00f3n said.<\/p>\n
\u2018Obviously, as a father, he fought for his daughter, but the current in that area is very strong, and they couldn\u2019t accomplish the objective,\u2019 the public official said of the actor.<\/p>\n
Officials with the Judicial Investigation Department in Costa Rica said that the actor died Sunday after he drowned while on a Caribbean beach in the country.<\/p>\nThe actor\u2019s untimely passing drew out multiple tributes from his colleagues and fans<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nWarner had been at Playa Cocles in the Limon province, authorities said, and had been drawn deep into the water by a current<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nWarner played the role of Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show opposite Bill Cosby\u2019s Dr. Heathcliff \u2018Cliff\u2019 Huxtable<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n
Warner\u2019s death was ruled as \u2018asphyxia due to submersion,\u2019 and accidental, Costa Rica\u2019s Judicial Investigation Agency confirmed to the publication Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The doctor told the outlet they were deeply emotionally impacted in the aftermath of the tragic death.<\/p>\n
\u2018The people who take part in this kind of rescue are always deeply affected,\u2019 said the doctor. \u2018You have to understand it\u2019s not easy, and it also takes time to heal.\u2019<\/p>\n
A first report from the department said that the actor had been \u2018rescued by people on the beach.\u2019<\/p>\n
Red Cross officials said that first responders who located Warner could not detect vital signs; and subsequently transferred him to a nearby morgue.<\/p>\n
Warner\u2019s career in entertainment spanned more than four decades, as he also had featured roles on sitcoms such as Malcolm & Eddie, Listen Up and Read Between the Lines and drama shows such as The Resident and Jeremiah.<\/p>\n
Warner spoke with the\u00a0AP\u00a0in 2015 about his drive in maintaining his career after The Cosby Show went off the air nearly a quarter-century ago.<\/p>\nWarner\u2019s career in entertainment spanned more than four decades, as he also had featured roles on sitcoms such as Malcolm & Eddie, Listen Up and Read Between the Lines and drama shows such as The Resident and Jeremiah. Said the actor, \u2018I grew up with a maniacal obsession with not wanting to be one of those \u201cWhere are they now kids.\u201d\u2018<\/p>\n
He continued, \u2018I feel very blessed to be able to have all of these avenues of expression \u2026 to be where I am now and finally at a place where I can let go of that worry about having a life after Cosby.\u2019<\/p>\n
Warner, who received a nomination for an Emmy in 1986 for supporting actor in a comedy, told the AP in 2015 that the sex assault accusations against Cosby had \u2018tarnished\u2019 the legacy of the series, which virtually disappeared from heavy play in syndication amid Cosby\u2019s legal issues.<\/p>\n
\u2018My biggest concern is when it comes to images of people of color on television and film,\u2019 Warner said. \u2018We\u2019ve always had The Cosby Show to hold up against that.<\/p>\n
\u2018And the fact that we no longer have that, that\u2019s the thing that saddens me the most because in a few generations the Huxtables will have been just a fairy tale.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
