Kelly Clarkson\u00a0continues to prioritize her two children after the\u00a0death of their father, Brandon Blackstock.<\/p>\n

A source tells PEOPLE that the singer-songwriter has \u201cbeen devastated\u201d for her kids River, 11, and Remington, 9, as their dad, who died on Thursday, Aug. 7 at age 48, faced cancer for three years privately.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she found out that he was sick, she remained protective of him for their sake,\u201d the source says. \u201cKelly has always tried to keep things classy. It became clear earlier this year that Brandon was not doing well. She\u2019s been devastated for the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarkson, 43, filed for divorce from Blackstock, a talent manager, in 2020 after seven years of marriage, and their split was finalized two years later. Though their divorce was acrimonious, and the two were later involved in various legal proceedings, the source says that Clarkson knew the importance of her children\u2019s relationship with their father.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe divorce was incredibly difficult for her \u2014 messy, painful and something she felt terrible about,\u201d the source says. \u201cBut she always wanted her kids to have the best relationship possible with their dad. She never spoke poorly about Brandon to the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2023, Clarkson\u00a0opened up about co-parenting\u00a0with Blackstock, and reiterated that her children and their feelings were her top priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ask my kids every night when we\u2019re snuggling and I put them to bed, \u2018Are you happy? And if you\u2019re not, what could make you happier?\u2019 \u201d Clarkson said on Angie Martinez\u2019s\u00a0IRL<\/em>\u00a0podcast. \u201cEspecially the past two years \u2026 it kills me [but] I want them to be honest so I don\u2019t ever say, \u2018Oh God, don\u2019t tell me that,\u2019 but a lot of times it\u00a0would be like, \u2018I\u2019m just really sad<\/a>. I wish Mommy and Daddy were in the same house.\u2019 They\u2019re really honest about it. I\u2019m raising that kind of individual.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cI just sit there and I\u2019m like, \u2018I get it. I\u2019m from a divorced family as well. I get it. That sucks. But we\u2019re going to work it out. And you are so loved by both of us.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n

In 2021, Clarkson said on her talk show that\u00a0sharing parenting duties\u00a0was \u201ctough,\u201d but there were things she and Blackstock agreed on.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s tough. \u2026 I know with me and Brandon, it\u2019s just a difficult thing because we\u2019re in different places, and it\u2019s like, we both agree on the main things, but it\u2019s a hard thing when you\u2019re not together all the time, for me personally,\u201d she said, later adding, \u201cAs long as you make sure it\u2019s about the children and their best interests, then we\u2019re both on board.\u201d<\/p>\n

A rep for the family announced Blackstock\u2019s death on Aug. 7 in a statement that revealed he\u2019d \u201cbravely battled cancer for more than three years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blackstock had not publicly shared his diagnosis prior to his death, though Clarkson\u00a0revealed that he was \u201cill\u201d\u00a0in a statement shared on Wednesday, Aug. 6.<\/p>\n

Clarkson wrote on Instagram at the time that she would be postponing her Las Vegas residency in order to be \u201cfully present\u201d for her kids.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children\u2019s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,\u201d she wrote in a statement. \u201cI am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows and I so appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n
