This variety isn\u2019t grown for direct human consumption but instead feeds livestock and powers industries\u2014think corn syrup, ethanol, or cornstarch. It\u2019s harvested late, when kernels are dry and hard, built more for utility than taste.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"441\" data-end=\"683\">In contrast, <strong data-start=\"454\" data-end=\"468\">sweet corn<\/strong> is what you enjoy at barbecues\u2014boiled, grilled, or even raw. It\u2019s picked earlier, with soft, sugary kernels perfect for fresh eating. While field corn is tough and dull, sweet corn is bright, tender, and flavorful.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"685\" data-end=\"990\">The two differ genetically as well. Field corn is often <strong data-start=\"741\" data-end=\"757\">GMO-modified<\/strong> for pest resistance and yield, while sweet corn is usually <strong data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"828\">non-GMO<\/strong> and grown on a smaller scale. You can\u2019t eat field corn raw\u2014it must be milled or processed. Sweet corn, however, is ready to eat almost immediately after harvest.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1257\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">In essence, <strong data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1035\">field corn fuels industries<\/strong>, while <strong data-start=\"1043\" data-end=\"1079\">sweet corn feeds people directly<\/strong>. Though they come from the same plant family, their uses, flavors, and farming practices are worlds apart.
