Come fast!!<\/em> I tore through the dark streets in my pajamas, heart hammering, mind racing through every nightmare a parent can imagine. But when she opened the door, safe and confused, she swore she\u2019d never sent a message. There were no calls, no texts. I tried to laugh it off, until another message appeared: I remember what you did.<\/em><\/p>\n

What followed were nights of silence broken only by 2 a.m. texts \u2014 accusations that sliced through years I thought were buried: You looked the other way. She cried for help. Do your hands still smell like gasoline?<\/em> The name I had avoided for twenty-five years returned: Sarika. A girl from my hometown, the one my best friend tormented, the one I didn\u2019t defend enough. The one who vanished after the night he tried to set her porch on fire.
