Stephanie \u201cTanqueray\u201d Johnson\u2019s life was pure New York \u2014 a mix of grit, glamour, and unapologetic survival. Born Aquila Stephanie Springle in 1944, she rose from poverty and strict religious roots in Albany to the vibrant chaos of Manhattan. Pushed out as a pregnant teen, she remade herself into Tanqueray<\/em>, a fearless burlesque performer who ruled the city\u2019s underground clubs in the 1960s and \u201970s.<\/p>\n

On October 11, 2025, Tanqueray passed away at her Manhattan home at age 81 after suffering a severe stroke. Her death was confirmed by Humans of New York<\/em> and her son, Mitchell Springle. Known for her dazzling stage presence and raw storytelling, she had lived many lives \u2014 dancer, designer, survivor \u2014 each more remarkable than the last.<\/p>\n

Her second act came decades later when Humans of New York<\/em> founder Brandon Stanton met her in Chelsea in 2019.
