At work, Paul was the quiet one \u2014 the guy with the same plain sandwich every day, no drink, no sides, no variety. We joked about it sometimes, thinking he was just unadventurous. When he quit, I helped him clear his desk \u2014 and found a bundle of children\u2019s drawings tied with a rubber band. Crayon hearts, stick figures, and little notes like \u201cThank you Mr. Paul\u201d<\/em> and \u201cBest sandwich ever.\u201d<\/em> One picture showed a man handing out sandwiches to a line of kids. I asked him about it later. He smiled and said, \u201cEver been to the West End Library around six? Come by.\u201d<\/p>\n

I did \u2014 and that\u2019s when I learned the truth. Every evening, Paul stood by the library with a cooler bag, handing out brown paper lunches to kids who didn\u2019t have dinner waiting at home. The \u201cboring\u201d sandwiches he made at work were practice runs \u2014 he made the same ones for the children: peanut butter and jelly, simple and dependable. \u201cNo one complains,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cSome say it\u2019s the best part of their day.\u201d It turned out those lunches weren\u2019t routine \u2014 they were hope, one meal at a time.<\/p>\n

He told me he grew up in foster care and knew what it was like to go hungry. \u201cYou remember every night you didn\u2019t eat,\u201d he said. \u201cI just don\u2019t want them to have those memories.\u201d But one week, Paul didn\u2019t show up. The hospital called \u2014 he\u2019d collapsed from exhaustion. I was listed as his emergency contact. Instead, he founded a nonprofit \u2014 One Meal Ahead.<\/strong> He said the name came from his foster dad\u2019s words: \u201cYou don\u2019t need to solve the world, just stay one meal ahead of the worst day.\u201d<\/em> Some of those kids are grown now \u2014 they still call him \u201cMr. Sandwich Man.\u201d And every time I see someone quietly doing good, I think of Paul \u2014 proof that you don\u2019t need fame or fanfare to make a difference.
