In a letter to <strong data-start=\"352\" data-end=\"382\">House Speaker Mike Johnson<\/strong>, AAF President <strong data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"414\">Thomas Jones<\/strong> alleged that Omar, who earns <strong data-start=\"444\" data-end=\"465\">$174,000 annually<\/strong>, is currently in <strong data-start=\"483\" data-end=\"509\">collection proceedings<\/strong> for loans totaling between <strong data-start=\"537\" data-end=\"560\">$15,001 and $50,000<\/strong>, according to her financial disclosure forms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"610\" data-end=\"1120\">Jones wrote that if Omar\u2019s loans are in default, the burden would shift to <strong data-start=\"685\" data-end=\"703\">U.S. taxpayers<\/strong>, calling the situation \u201cunconscionable and embarrassing.\u201d The watchdog group further alleged that Omar may be using her congressional influence to <strong data-start=\"851\" data-end=\"893\">discourage the Department of Education<\/strong> from enforcing collection actions, though no evidence has been publicly provided. AAF said it has filed a <strong data-start=\"1000\" data-end=\"1037\">Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)<\/strong> request to obtain records of any communications between Omar and the department.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1122\" data-end=\"1415\">In its letter, the group urged Speaker Johnson to consider an <strong data-start=\"1184\" data-end=\"1209\">unprecedented measure<\/strong> \u2014 withholding Omar\u2019s congressional salary and redirecting payments to her student loan servicer, <strong data-start=\"1307\" data-end=\"1317\">Nelnet<\/strong>, until her debt is brought current. Omar\u2019s office has <strong data-start=\"1372\" data-end=\"1393\">not yet commented<\/strong> on the allegations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1417\" data-end=\"1897\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The AAF, a conservative watchdog organization, has previously targeted Democratic lawmakers with ethics complaints. The claims have renewed debate over Omar\u2019s role as one of Congress\u2019s most vocal advocates for <strong data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1656\">student debt cancellation<\/strong>, with critics arguing that her personal finances could represent a <strong data-start=\"1724\" data-end=\"1748\">conflict of interest<\/strong>.
