The U.S. House of Representatives delivered a rare unanimous vote this week, approving legislation intended to restore and strengthen the federal office responsible for advocating on behalf of veterans\u2019 surviving family members.<\/p>\n
Lawmakers voted 424-0 to pass H.R. 1228, known as the \u201cPrioritizing Veterans\u2019 Survivors Act.\u201d The measure would return the Department of Veterans Affairs\u2019 Office of Survivors Assistance to its original position under the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and reaffirm its role as the leading advocate for policies affecting military families and the survivors of deceased service members.<\/p>\n
Sponsored by Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani of Arizona, the legislation amends federal law to clarify the structure and responsibilities of the Office of Survivors Assistance. Supporters say the bill reverses a 2021 administrative change that reduced the office\u2019s influence and weakened its ability to represent veterans\u2019 survivors. The measure now moves to the Senate for consideration.<\/p>\n
The vote comes as Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins has pushed back against reports claiming that the Trump administration plans significant reductions to veterans\u2019 benefits and health care services. Collins said the department has protected approximately 300,000 mission-critical positions to ensure that medical care and benefit services continue without interruption.<\/p>\n
Collins also rejected claims that veterans\u2019 benefits are being reduced, saying the VA had redirected nearly $98 million toward programs and services for veterans. He additionally denied reports that Veterans Crisis Line employees had been dismissed, emphasizing that crisis responders remain available to assist veterans in need.<\/p>\n

In a separate development, House Republicans approved a fiscal year 2027 spending package that funds the State Department, national security programs and other federal priorities. The measure passed 217-209, with one Democrat joining Republicans in support and one Republican voting against it.<\/p>\n
House leaders attached the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility, or SAVE America Act, to the funding legislation. The proposal would require people registering to vote in federal elections to provide proof of U.S. citizenship and would establish identification requirements for casting ballots.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump has described the election proposal as a major priority, arguing that it would strengthen confidence in federal elections and ensure that only eligible U.S. citizens participate. Critics, however, have raised concerns that the requirements could make voting more difficult for some eligible citizens.<\/p>\n
The combined funding package now heads to the Senate, where the SAVE America Act faces an uncertain future. Reports suggest senators may remove the election provisions before approving the broader appropriations legislation, although House Republicans believe including the proposal will increase political pressure on the Senate to address it.<\/p>\n
The House has already approved other spending measures this year, including legislation providing more than $2 billion for improvements to Veterans Affairs medical facilities and national cemeteries. Lawmakers also passed an agriculture funding bill that includes $1.16 billion for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and additional measures related to tracking foreign ownership of American farmland.<\/p>\n
