New questions are surrounding California Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s political operation following reports that a longtime Democratic insider secretly recorded conversations while assisting a federal corruption investigation.<\/p>\n
The investigation initially centered on Dana Williamson, Newsom\u2019s former chief of staff, but reports indicate federal authorities have also examined people and financial activity connected to the governor, his staff and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.<\/p>\n
According to the New York Post<\/em>, investigators obtained cooperation from Alexis Podesta, a veteran Democratic political operative with extensive connections inside California\u2019s state government.<\/p>\n Podesta reportedly began recording conversations as early as June 2024, well before the broader investigation became publicly known.<\/p>\n Williamson pleaded guilty in May 2026 to conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, filing a false tax return and making false statements to a federal agent.<\/p>\n Her attorney, former U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott, confirmed that Podesta assisted investigators while Williamson did not.<\/p>\n \u201cAlexis wore a wire, and Dana did not,\u201d Scott told the newspaper.<\/p>\n The disclosure may help explain why several Sacramento lobbyists, lawmakers and political insiders reportedly received letters from the FBI informing them that some of their telephone conversations had been intercepted during the investigation.<\/p>\n Several recipients were reportedly surprised because they had little or no apparent connection to Williamson.<\/p>\n Republican California Assemblyman Josh Hoover said he received one of the notification letters even though he had never spoken with Williamson or Podesta.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hoover said the number of people who received letters suggested that federal investigators had cast a broad net across Sacramento\u2019s political community while searching for evidence.<\/p>\n Another individual familiar with the matter told the newspaper that numerous political figures received similar notices, including people who said they had never met Williamson.<\/p>\n Newsom publicly announced in June that he, his wife and people close to his administration were facing federal scrutiny.<\/p>\n The governor accused President Donald Trump and political appointees inside the Justice Department of pursuing him because of their political rivalry and speculation that Newsom could seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.<\/p>\n Newsom has maintained that he and his family have nothing to hide and has demanded that the federal government release information concerning the investigations.<\/p>\n However, sources familiar with the inquiries have said that portions of the investigation originated in California and had been underway for approximately a year, including examinations prompted by whistleblower complaints.<\/p>\n Neither Newsom nor Jennifer Siebel Newsom has been publicly charged with a crime in connection with the reported investigations.<\/p>\n Podesta has also not been charged with a crime. Her attorney, Bill Portanova, has identified her as an uncharged co-conspirator referenced in the Williamson case and confirmed that she cooperated with federal authorities.<\/p>\n Newsom\u2019s office declined to discuss Podesta\u2019s reported role, describing the issue as a personnel matter.<\/p>\n According to federal court records, Williamson participated in a scheme that diverted approximately $225,000 from a dormant political campaign account associated with former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.<\/p>\n Prosecutors said the money was moved through multiple businesses and disguised as compensation for a job that did not actually exist. The funds ultimately benefited Sean McCluskie, Becerra\u2019s former chief of staff.<\/p>\n Williamson also admitted making false statements to FBI agents about the diverted campaign money, allegedly fabricated contracts and information she passed to former clients and business associates.<\/p>\n Court filings additionally described allegations involving confidential California government information related to litigation against video-game company Activision Blizzard.<\/p>\n Prosecutors said Williamson shared state information with a co-conspirator who was later identified by attorneys and media reports as Podesta.<\/p>\n Williamson\u2019s plea agreement referenced a recorded June 2024 conversation in which the two discussed how to respond to a California Public Records Act request connected to the litigation.<\/p>\n The recorded conversation appears to align with reports that Podesta had already begun cooperating with investigators and secretly documenting discussions inside California\u2019s political network.<\/p>\n Hoover said the expanding investigation should concern the public because it raises questions about the conversations, relationships and conduct taking place inside Newsom\u2019s administration and the wider Sacramento political establishment.<\/p>\n The existence of an investigation does not establish criminal wrongdoing by every person whose communications were intercepted or whose records were examined.
