At first, I thought it was some kind of earthworm, but its movement and unusual appearance immediately felt different. Its body had dark stripes running along it, while its head was wide, flat, and shaped almost like a tiny hammer or shovel. Unlike ordinary earthworms, hammerhead worms are predators that feed on other small invertebrates, including earthworms. Their smooth gliding movement and unusual appearance can make them look almost alien when seen unexpectedly in a garden or yard.<\/p>\n<p>Because of their biology, it is best not to handle hammerhead worms with bare hands. Some species can produce chemical compounds used to help subdue prey, and unnecessary contact is not recommended. If one appears in your yard, keep children and pets away, avoid touching it directly, and do not cut it into pieces, since some flatworms have remarkable regenerative abilities.<\/p>\n<p>What first looked like something from a science-fiction movie turned out to be a real and highly specialized predator living quietly beneath our feet. The experience reminded me how easy it is to misidentify unfamiliar wildlife based only on first impressions.
