The four boys and three girls—Kenneth “Kenny” Robert, Alexis May, Natalie Sue, Kelsey Ann, Nathan Roy, Brandon James, and Joel Steven—were delivered by Caesarean section within approximately six minutes of one another, about nine weeks prematurely. Their birth weights ranged from roughly 2 pounds, 5 ounces to 3 pounds, 4 ounces, and a large medical team was needed to care for them. Bobbi had become pregnant after fertility treatment with an ovulation-stimulating medication, and because carrying seven babies involved enormous medical risks, her pregnancy had attracted attention even before the delivery. The McCaugheys, who already had an older daughter named Mikayla, suddenly became internationally famous when all seven newborns survived. They became recognized as the world’s first known surviving set of septuplets, eventually earning recognition from Guinness World Records. President Bill Clinton called the family to congratulate them, they later appeared on *The Oprah Winfrey Show*, and donations poured in—including a large house, a van, clothing, diapers, and educational scholarships.

Behind the extraordinary headlines was the enormous challenge of raising seven babies at the same time while also caring for Mikayla. Feeding, diaper changes, laundry, medical appointments, and everyday childcare became around-the-clock responsibilities, while Bobbi and Kenny attempted to give their children as normal an upbringing as possible in Carlisle, Iowa. Two of the septuplets, Alexis and Nathan, were diagnosed with cerebral palsy and used walkers during childhood. Nathan underwent spinal surgery in 2005 and later worked toward walking independently. As the children became older, their parents gradually reduced the family’s media appearances so the siblings could concentrate on school and ordinary childhood experiences. All seven eventually attended school in Iowa and graduated from Carlisle High School in May 2016—a particularly meaningful milestone considering the uncertainty surrounding their survival when they had been born so prematurely nearly nineteen years earlier.

Adulthood finally began taking the seven siblings in different directions. Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan, and Joel enrolled at Hannibal-LaGrange University in Missouri, while Kenny and Alexis attended Des Moines Area Community College closer to home. Brandon chose a different path and entered the United States Army. Their interests also became increasingly individual: Alexis studied early childhood education, Nathan and Joel pursued computer-related studies, Kelsey studied public relations, and Natalie explored athletic training, although their careers could naturally evolve beyond those early plans. Their personal lives changed as well. Their older sister Mikayla married in 2015 and later became a mother, making the septuplets aunts and uncles. Natalie became the first of the seven to marry in May 2019, and Brandon married later that year. By 2022, reports indicated that Brandon and Kenny had become fathers themselves. After spending their childhood constantly identified as a single group, adulthood finally allowed each sibling to develop an independent identity while maintaining the unusually close relationship created by growing up with six same-age brothers and sisters.

The family’s story continued evolving long after the worldwide attention surrounding their birth faded. Bobbi and Kenny eventually became empty nesters after raising all eight children, and the enormous Carlisle house that had once been donated to accommodate their family was later passed to Ruth Harbor, an organization helping mothers in need. On November 19, 2025, Kenny, Alexis, Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan, Brandon, and Joel celebrated their 28th birthday, nearly three decades after doctors and people around the world had watched anxiously to see whether seven extremely premature babies would survive. Their historical distinction is important: they were not the first septuplets ever born, but they became the first known set in recorded history in which all seven children survived, and Guinness World Records has recognized them as the oldest living septuplets. What began as an extraordinary medical and media story ultimately became something much larger—a story about seven siblings who survived a remarkably premature multiple birth, grew up together under worldwide attention, overcame individual challenges, and eventually created separate lives, careers, relationships, and families while remaining forever connected by one of the most remarkable births in modern history.

On November 19, 1997, Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey made history when Bobbi gave birth to seven babies at Iowa Methodist Medical Center…

[1

post-41003","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news

The World’s First Surviving Septuplets Celebrate Their 26th Birthday!
