At first glance, the photographs of Tom Jones and Marjorie Wallace seem to capture nothing more than a glamorous celebrity romance: a world-famous singer and a young beauty queen enjoying the sunshine far from the pressures of ordinary life. But behind those smiles was a relationship surrounded by secrecy, complicated loyalties, enormous fame and consequences that would follow both of them for years. By the 1960s and 1970s, Jones had become an international phenomenon, famous not only for his powerful voice and electrifying stage presence but also for his reputation with women. Yet throughout that extraordinary rise stood Linda, the woman he had married before fame transformed his life. They remained married for 59 years until her death from lung cancer in 2016, despite Jones later acknowledging that he had been repeatedly unfaithful during his career. Wallace had already lived an unusually adventurous life before meeting Jones. Born in 1954, she reportedly became rebellious following her parents\u2019 divorce and demonstrated an independent streak from an early age, including taking a remarkable road trip to Miami with a friend when she was only 14. Athletic, outgoing and attracted to the excitement surrounding entertainment, she eventually entered the world of beauty competitions and achieved something historic in 1973. At just 20, Wallace became the first American woman to win the Miss World title, defeating dozens of contestants at London\u2019s Royal Albert Hall and instantly becoming internationally famous. That same year, she met Tom Jones backstage at the London Palladium. The attraction reportedly developed quickly, but both their circumstances made the relationship dangerous. Jones was married to Linda, while Wallace was romantically involved with racing star Peter Revson, who competed in Formula One and the Indianapolis 500. When Jones and Wallace later traveled to Barbados in connection with a Miss World television project and photographs emerged showing them kissing on the beach, what had been private suddenly became an international scandal. Wallace was already under scrutiny over her personal life, and soon afterward she was stripped of her Miss World crown.<\/p>\n

Then the scandal was overshadowed by tragedy. In March 1974, Peter Revson was killed during practice for the South African Grand Prix. Reports surrounding his death claimed that he had been wearing a gold locket given to him by Wallace, engraved with the words, \u201cIf not for you\u2026\u201d Wallace was suddenly dealing with grief, intense publicity and the collapse of the glamorous image that had surrounded her Miss World victory. Her relationship with Jones was also unraveling. Jones reportedly became increasingly concerned that Linda would discover the affair and ultimately ended the relationship. Not long afterward, Wallace was hospitalized after taking an overdose of sleeping pills and required serious medical treatment. She survived and later maintained that she had not deliberately attempted to end her life, explaining instead that she had been deeply depressed and had taken too many pills during an extraordinarily difficult period. Jones was reportedly performing in Las Vegas when he learned what had happened and sent flowers and well wishes. Although reports suggested they later saw one another again, the passionate romance that had attracted so much attention had effectively become part of their past.<\/p>\n

Wallace eventually rebuilt her life and career rather than allowing that turbulent period to define her. She pursued television and commercial work and became one of the early co-anchors of Entertainment Tonight<\/em> in 1981. She married film producer Michael Klein in 1978 and had a son, Adam, before their marriage ended, and later married real-estate developer Donald Soffer before that relationship also ended in divorce. Remarkably, Wallace and Jones did not remain bitter enemies. Decades later, she said they still occasionally communicated, spoke warmly about his career and praised his enduring voice, while making it clear that she had no desire to reopen their romantic past. That is what makes those old photographs so striking today. What appears to be a carefree vacation scene actually sits at the center of a complicated story involving a married superstar, a newly crowned Miss World, a celebrated racing driver, public scandal, devastating loss and a relationship that survived in a very different form after the romance disappeared.
