Hayden Panettiere spent the final years of her life carrying a grief that never completely disappeared: the loss of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere. The siblings had grown up together in an unusual world, both entering the entertainment industry at young ages and experiencing pressures few children could fully understand. Hayden eventually became internationally known through Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, while Jansen pursued acting before increasingly devoting himself to painting and other artwork. Their relationship remained close into adulthood. But Hayden’s grief over Jansen was more complicated than simply missing him. While working on her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she spoke about the guilt she carried as his older sister and the questions that continued haunting her after his death. She discussed Jansen’s struggles with substance abuse and acknowledged that learning how serious those problems had become made her repeatedly wonder whether she should have recognized more, intervened sooner, or somehow found a different way to help him. Hayden had experience with treatment herself, and she tried to use that knowledge to support her brother. She helped him seek treatment and communicated with his therapist, but eventually realized that the experience she associated with healing did not feel the same way to Jansen. Where she could remember finding moments of peace in treatment, she said her brother experienced it as feeling “caged.” That difference forced Hayden to confront an agonizing limitation familiar to families affected by addiction: loving someone intensely does not necessarily give you the power to rescue them. Jansen’s death also came after Hayden had spent years confronting difficulties of her own. She had spoken publicly about addiction, anxiety, postpartum depression and treatment, as well as one of the most misunderstood chapters of her life: living apart from her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. Hayden explained that when Kaya was still very young, she herself was struggling significantly and an arrangement was made for her daughter to live primarily in Europe with her father. Initially, the separation was extraordinarily painful. Yet as Hayden recovered, she recognized that Kaya had established a stable life there, surrounded by relatives, friends, school and activities. Hayden said she eventually had to ask herself whether disrupting that life simply because she was now healthier would actually benefit her daughter. She concluded that being a loving mother sometimes meant accepting an arrangement that hurt her personally but provided stability for Kaya. Hayden strongly rejected the idea that she had simply abandoned her child. She described maintaining frequent communication, traveling to see Kaya whenever possible and remaining deeply involved emotionally despite the physical distance between them. The public judgment surrounding that decision was especially painful because outsiders often saw only the separation, while Hayden viewed the choice through the much more complicated reality of motherhood, recovery and trying to determine what was best for her daughter rather than what would make her look best to other people.<\/p>\n

Then, on August 16, 2026, Hayden’s own life ended unexpectedly. She was 36. Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death in a family statement, while authorities said she had been found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina. Police and emergency personnel reportedly responded at approximately 1:50 p.m., attempted to provide medical assistance, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Greenville Police Department and Greenville County Coroner’s Office began investigating the circumstances, with preliminary information reportedly providing no indication of foul play or suspicious circumstances. Until an official cause of death is established, her previous struggles with addiction, mental health or her relationship with Brian Hickerson should not be treated as explanations for what happened. Hickerson had previously been involved in a highly publicized domestic-violence case and in 2021 received jail time and probation after pleading no contest to two felony counts involving injury to a spouse or girlfriend, while Hayden had separately discussed what she said she experienced during their relationship. Those chapters formed part of a complicated life, but they do not establish the circumstances of her death. What remains especially moving are Hayden’s own words about Jansen and the possibility of seeing him again someday. For years she had tried to transform grief into remembrance, keeping his paintings close and speaking his name publicly even when doing so hurt.
