Amanda rushed to the hospital expecting the worst. She found Tyler awake but badly bruised, suffering from a fractured shoulder, three cracked ribs, and a concussion. Relief quickly mixed with anger when she learned how he had been hurt. Tyler\u2019s crew had been ordered out of the burning warehouse because the structure was becoming dangerously unstable, but as they evacuated, Tyler heard a little girl crying somewhere upstairs. Knowing there might be only seconds left, he went back inside. He found the child, carried her through the smoke, and managed to get her safely outside without a scratch. His department had nominated him for the Medal of Valor because of the rescue, and the nomination had been approved. Suddenly, Amanda understood some of the uncomfortable silence she had encountered when she walked into the station. What she had imagined would be an ordinary birthday surprise had collided with one of the most frightening\u2014and extraordinary\u2014days of Tyler\u2019s career. He had always dismissed birthdays as \u201cjust another day,\u201d but this birthday would now forever carry the memory of a little girl who went home safely because Tyler had been willing to run toward danger when everyone else had been ordered away from it.<\/p>\n

The following morning, Captain Reyes appeared at Tyler\u2019s hospital room accompanied by the entire crew. This time nobody avoided Amanda\u2019s eyes.
