Behind the wholesome comedy were plenty of unusual details and continuity mistakes. Actresses changed over the years, the Cannonball locomotive mysteriously switched from No. 3 to No. 8, and an old shot of Gunilla Hutton reportedly remained in the opening credits even after Meredith MacRae replaced her as Billie Jo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Some of the most memorable stories happened behind the scenes. Linda Kaye Henning, who played Betty Jo, was the daughter of series creator Paul Henning. Her television romance with Steve Elliott, played by Mike Minor, became real when the actors married about 10 months after their characters\u2019 wedding. Henning reportedly even wore the same wedding gown used on the show. Edgar Buchanan appeared as Uncle Joe in all 222 episodes, while Higgins, the dog known simply as \u201cDog\u201d on the series, later became famous as the star of the 1974 movie <em>Benji<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The show\u2019s most heartbreaking chapter involved Bea Benaderet, whose Kate Bradley was the emotional center of the Shady Rest. During the fifth season, doctors discovered an inoperable lung tumor, forcing her to undergo radiation treatment and miss episodes. She briefly returned, but her condition worsened, and her final participation became severely limited. Benaderet died on October 13, 1968, at age 62. Tragically, her husband Eugene Twombly died of a heart attack only four days later.<\/p>\n<p><em>Petticoat Junction<\/em> continued without its beloved leading lady until 1970, as television networks increasingly moved away from rural comedies and advertisers focused more heavily on audience demographics. After seven seasons, the Shady Rest finally closed, but the series remained unforgettable to generations of viewers.
