Her parents introduced her to ballet to help strengthen her body, but dance soon became far more than therapy. She trained seriously in ballet, studied in the United States and Europe, and eventually adopted the name Cyd Charisse before finding her way into Hollywood through dance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Her breakthrough came during MGM\u2019s golden age of musicals. Charisse appeared with Gene Kelly in <em>Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/em>, where she had no dialogue but became unforgettable through movement alone, and later starred opposite Fred Astaire in <em>The Band Wagon<\/em>. Her elegance, control, and versatility allowed her to match two of Hollywood\u2019s greatest male dancers, and she refused to choose which was better, saying their styles were too different to compare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Away from the screen, Charisse built a remarkably stable life with singer Tony Martin, whom she married in 1948. Their marriage lasted around 60 years, and they raised a family together. But her life also included deep tragedy when Sheila Charisse, the wife of her son Nico, was killed in the 1979 crash of American Airlines Flight 191, one of the deadliest aviation disasters in U.S. history.<\/p>\n<p>As the era of large Hollywood musicals faded, Charisse continued performing on television, stage, and in live shows, eventually making her Broadway debut in <em>Grand Hotel<\/em>. She received the National Medal of Arts in 2006 and died in 2008 at age 86 after a heart attack.
