An unusual case report published in Frontiers in Neuroscience<\/em> describes an octogenarian woman with a 10-year history of Alzheimer\u2019s disease who experienced striking temporary functional improvements following supervised administration of psilocybin-containing mushrooms. Before the intervention, she had spent years with severely reduced spontaneous communication and predominantly one-word speech.<\/p>\n

Approximately 19 hours after administration, researchers reported that she spontaneously began an autobiographical conversation lasting around four hours. During the following days, she also showed improvements in family recognition, mobility, dressing herself, emotional responsiveness and social interaction. Some improvements reportedly remained noticeable for weeks.<\/p>\n

The case does not<\/strong> establish that psilocybin can reverse or treat Alzheimer\u2019s disease. It involved only one patient, lacked a control group, and the authors themselves describe the improvements as transient. The initial administration was also associated with concerning acute effects including heavy sweating, suspected hyperthermia and a prolonged deep sleep-like state.<\/p>\n

Researchers say the observation raises the possibility that some residual functional capacity could persist even in advanced neurodegeneration and temporarily become accessible under particular neurological conditions. Much larger and controlled studies would be required before determining whether the observation has any therapeutic significance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
