American bison are once again establishing a presence in the grasslands of northern Mexico. In November 2025, 44 animals from Rancho El Uno in the Janos Biosphere Reserve in Chihuahua were transferred to the El Santuario conservation area in Coahuila, according to Mexico\u2019s SEMARNAT and CONANP.<\/p>\n
The relocation is part of a broader effort to expand conservation herds and restore grasslands across the Chihuahuan Desert. Mexican environmental authorities describe the bison as an important ecological species because its presence can improve soil structure, encourage native vegetation and help dry grassland ecosystems become more resilient.<\/p>\n
Early reports from Cuatro Ci\u00e9negas have been encouraging. New calves have been born since the herd arrived, while local conservation reporting has described better water infiltration, germination of grasses and the presence of wildlife including pumas and bobcats around the recovering ecosystem.<\/p>\n
The restoration is still young, so its long-term ecological effects will require continued monitoring.
