Its unusual shape made it look almost otherworldly, and at first I had no idea what I was looking at. Curious but cautious, I took photographs rather than touching it and later contacted a local marine biologist for help identifying i&#8230;<strong>Continue Reading<\/strong><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The biologist explained that the mysterious creature was a roughtail stingray, a species found along the Atlantic coast. What frightened me most was learning that stingrays have venomous barbs near their tails. Even after a stingray dies, its barb can remain dangerous and may still cause a serious injury if someone accidentally steps on or handles it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A sting from the barb can cause severe pain, swelling, muscle cramps, nausea, and infection, and in rare circumstances can even be fatal. I immediately thought about how close Charlie had been while sniffing the animal and how I had stood only inches away. What had seemed like an interesting discovery could have ended very differently.<\/p>\n<p>The experience taught me never to touch an unfamiliar sea creature, even when it appears to be dead. Children and pets should also be kept away while the animal is observed from a safe distance or reported to local beach authorities.
