Smallpox was once one of the world&#8217;s most feared infectious diseases, causing countless deaths before widespread vaccination campaigns dramatically reduced transmission and eventually helped eliminate the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike many modern vaccines delivered with a single injection, the smallpox vaccine was traditionally administered using a special bifurcated needle that made several rapid punctures in the skin. A characteristic reaction developed at the vaccination site, usually progressing through a raised bump and blister-like lesion before forming a scab. Once healed, it frequently left behind a permanent circular scar.<\/p>\n<p>Routine smallpox vaccination eventually ended in many countries after the disease was eradicated globally, which is why the familiar scar is much more common among older generations. Similar upper-arm scars can also come from certain other vaccines, including BCG vaccination against tuberculosis, depending on the country.
