He placed a wooden box in front of me containing childhood photographs, the inexpensive watch I had given my stepdad for Father\u2019s Day when I was nine, and a letter addressed to me. Beneath everything was a copy of the will. The lawyer explained that his biological children had deliberately lied\u2014they had no authority to exclude me and already knew what their father had decided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">My stepdad had divided most of his financial assets equally among all of us, but he left his house entirely to me. In his letter, he explained that biology had never determined who he considered his daughter. The house belonged to me because it held the memories we had created together, and because I had continued visiting and caring for him as he grew older. The wooden box, filled with reminders of our years together, contained what he considered his most valuable possessions.<\/p>\n<p>His biological children eventually discovered that preventing me from attending the meeting had changed nothing. I never tried to take away the inheritance he had left them, and months later I moved into the home where he had raised me.
