When I asked what he meant, Tyler broke down and explained that Jason had been bringing folders into Grandma’s room whenever I wasn’t there. He had watched Jason place documents in front of her and tell her they were necessary so he could help manage everything. Still weak from surgery and taking medication, Grandma had signed several papers without fully understanding what Jason was asking her to authorize.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I contacted our family attorney and discovered that Jason had submitted paperwork seeking access to several of Grandma’s bank accounts, and one account had already been changed. Confronted with what we’d found, Jason admitted that his business was struggling and he desperately needed $20,000. Grandma had already refused to give him the money before her surgery, so he had waited until she was vulnerable and tried to obtain access another way.<\/p>\n

We revoked the permissions, secured Grandma’s finances, and changed the locks. Jason eventually apologized, but his financial desperation couldn’t excuse taking advantage of his recovering mother, and rebuilding the family’s trust would take time.
