A single silverfish is unlikely to cause serious damage, but a larger population can gradually harm books, photographs, documents, wallpaper, and stored belongings. Because they are mostly active at night, homeowners may not realize how many are present until sightings become frequent.<\/p>\n<p>The most important step is to address the conditions attracting them. Check bathrooms, pipes, basements, windows, and appliances for leaks, condensation, mold, or persistent dampness. Improving ventilation, using a dehumidifier, repairing leaks, removing stacks of cardboard and paper, storing food and documents properly, and sealing cracks around pipes, doors, and baseboards can make the home much less attractive to silverfish.<\/p>\n<p>Finding one silverfish occasionally does not automatically mean you have an infestation. However, frequent sightings in several rooms, insects appearing during the day, damaged paper products, or continued activity despite cleaning and drying should be taken more seriously.
