Eventually, we lost touch, and I believed that chapter of my life was over. When Leo saw the compass in my hand, however, he immediately begged me not to take it away. He explained that Clara had been his foster mother when he was six. She had taught him how to use the compass and had even repaired Captain&#8217;s torn ear with blue thread.<\/p>\n<p>Leo then showed me a folded note attached to the compass. Clara explained that she had followed Leo&#8217;s journey through several foster homes and recognized my name when she discovered I was listed as a potential placement. She was seriously ill and had deliberately sent the compass with Leo, trusting that it would connect us again. Her message ended with a simple request: \u201cTake care of him.\u201d Three weeks later, I drove six hours to find Clara in hospice and eventually returned with Leo so he could see her too. Though weak, she smiled when he walked into the room carrying the compass.<\/p>\n<p>Clara died a few months later, leaving the compass to Leo. What had once been a childhood gift between two friends had become a bridge connecting two lives she didn&#8217;t want to remain lost. Leo is nine now and still carries it with him. We recently took it into a real forest, where he proudly used it to guide us back. He says the needle always knows where it belongs.
