In some cases, a chest X-ray later shows part of the lung appearing unusually white or opaque. This does not mean the lung has literally turned white; it means that an area normally filled with air has become denser because of inflammation, fluid, collapsed tissue, or another abnormal proc&#8230;<strong>Continue Reading<\/strong><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Pneumonia is one possible reason for this appearance, but it is not the only explanation. Atelectasis, where part of the lung collapses, and pleural effusion, where fluid accumulates around the lung, can produce similar X-ray findings. Pneumonia itself can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or other organisms, which is why an X-ray image alone cannot determine the exact cause or whether antibiotics are needed.<\/p>\n<p>Parents should pay particular attention to how a sick child is breathing and behaving rather than relying only on the temperature reading. Warning signs include unusually fast or difficult breathing, the skin pulling inward around the ribs, flaring nostrils, grunting, blue or gray lips, extreme tiredness, difficulty waking, inability to drink normally, or signs that the child is rapidly getting worse. Young children can sometimes deteriorate quickly because their airways are smaller and they may not be able to describe what they are feeling.<\/p>\n<p>A mild fever therefore does not always mean an illness is mild. Chest X-rays must be interpreted together with the child\u2019s symptoms, oxygen level, examination, and medical history.
