Before I could respond, Daniel came downstairs, read the board, and simply said, \u201cOkay.\u201d Susan reluctantly made breakfast, struggled to find everything in the unfamiliar kitchen, and automatically left her dirty plate behind afterward\u2014until Daniel looked at her and she quietly returned to pick it up.<\/p>\n<p>Later, I overheard a conversation that made me realize the problem was more complicated than I&#8217;d thought. Susan explained that Mom had mentioned housework becoming difficult, but Susan had somehow convinced herself that allowing Mom to host was giving her something she enjoyed. Then Mom finally admitted what she&#8217;d never said aloud: she loved taking care of people, but she had been working so hard because she wanted Daniel&#8217;s family to approve of her. She had essentially been auditioning for a place in my new family. Susan apologized for ordering her to move the flowers, and Mom accepted before calmly adding, \u201cI like taking care of people. I don&#8217;t like being taken for granted. Those aren&#8217;t the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence changed the entire weekend. By Sunday, Susan was washing dishes without anyone reminding her, and everyone had begun contributing instead of waiting for Mom to serve them.
