Rosalind had returned to the area four years earlier after a divorce, completely alone and battling stage three cancer. She had no family left and knew almost no one except Nathaniel, the man she had once nearly married before he chose me. She had not come back to reclaim him. She had simply returned to spend her final years somewhere familiar, with no one beside her.<\/p>\n

Nathaniel had learned about her condition and could not bring himself to let her face treatment alone. He secretly married her so he could put her on his health insurance and make sure her medical care was covered. The Tuesday trips I had imagined were signs of betrayal were actually drives to Vanderbilt for oncology appointments, where he stayed with her through treatment before coming home emotionally exhausted.<\/p>\n
