Terry Jennings was 15 when he left school and joined his father Waylon\u2019s touring operation. He started by selling merchandise, later worked as a drum technician and took on responsibilities in the tour business. The work brought him close to his father\u2019s career\u2014but also into an adult world that offered little separation between family life and the road.<\/p>\n

Waylon was 19 when Terry was born, and the relatively small age gap shaped their relationship as they traveled and worked together. Terry later described them as more like brothers than father and son. That closeness meant he was a companion and employee as well as Waylon\u2019s child, at an age when he still needed a parent to set limits.<\/p>\n

In his account of those years, Terry described drugs, guns and women as part of the touring environment. He also acknowledged that he joined in the partying and used drugs. Terry said Waylon did not introduce him to drugs, but recalled that his father knew he was already using them and advised him against taking inferior drugs. The recollection points to a boundary between father and son that had become difficult to maintain.<\/p>\n

Terry did not present Waylon only as a failure in his role as a father. He said his father loved his children and believed Waylon pursued music partly to provide a better life for them. Terry could recognize the cost of Waylon\u2019s absence and the risks of growing up on tour while still holding on to his affection for him.<\/p>\n

Waylon quit cocaine in the mid-1980s. Years later, on a flight to a Dallas Cowboys game, father and son discussed Terry writing about their shared history. Terry said Waylon encouraged the idea, reasoning that his son had been there from near the beginning and was willing to tell the truth.<\/p>\n

Terry did not act on the idea immediately. After Waylon died in 2002, he returned to it, and his memoir, Waylon: Tales of My Outlaw Dad<\/em>, was published in 2016. Writing as both a family member and a member of the crew, Terry described a father who could be loving and generous, yet reckless and absent. His account kept the contradictions intact rather than asking readers to choose between the celebrated outlaw and the man his son knew.<\/p>\n
