Leg operations, damaged ribs and persistent trouble with his knees and back were piling up alongside the demands of a weekly production.

The schedule left little room to recover. An hour-long drama typically had seven days to film an episode; The Rockford Files was made in six. Garner described workdays of 12 or 14 hours on pavement, often for five days in a row. He performed much of the physical action himself, and Stuart Margolin, who played Angel Martin, later recalled that Garner stayed on set to provide off-camera lines for other actors.

That commitment helped make Jim Rockford feel different from a conventional TV action hero. The private investigator was often outmatched, reluctant to fight and visibly affected when he was hit or knocked down. Garner’s performance made the character’s physical vulnerability convincing, even as the work placed increasing strain on the actor himself.

A renewal against a difficult reality

NBC wanted another season, and Garner agreed to continue, though he had made clear he needed physical rest. The renewal brought a practical dispute over the schedule: Garner wanted episodes to take seven days, rather than the compressed six-day routine. He was also a star and producer who had helped shape the show, making it difficult simply to step away from the work.

By late 1979, illness and accumulated injuries brought production to a halt. Contemporary reports cited ulcers, a stomach virus and sinus trouble as well as his broader exhaustion. Garner later described himself as “a physical mess.”

The series did not get a specially written finale. Its final original episode aired in January 1980, after filming had stopped, and four scripts prepared for the unfinished season were never made. The end came through the interruption of production, not a closing case for Rockford or a planned farewell.

A role revisited

Garner returned to the character in reunion movies beginning in 1994. Those later appearances allowed him to play Rockford again, but they did not change the reason the weekly series had ended: the demands of making it had become too much for his body.

The finished episodes make the detective’s bruises part of the story. The production history tells a less visible one: a leading actor repeatedly working through pain, on a demanding schedule, until another season was no longer physically sustainable.

JAMES GARNER’S JIM ROCKFORD TOOK A REAL PHYSICAL TOLL ON THE ACTOR.

In May 1979, Garner told Washington Post critic Tom Shales that three of the previous five breaks from The Rockford Files had included time in hospitals.
