He left me his house, investments, and much of his estate, but part of the inheritance had been placed in a trust that Mark could not simply control or distribute. Dad also left me a letter reminding me that marriage should be a partnership and that I should never feel guilty for protecting what belonged to me. Samuel immediately became concerned when I told him about the promises Mark had already made.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned home and explained that the inheritance was not available for Mark to spend however he wanted, his attitude changed. He was upset that I would not immediately fund the plans he had made for his family, but I finally told him clearly that he had made those promises without my permission and without knowing what the estate actually contained. For once, I refused to soften my answer simply to keep the peace.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next several months, I handled my father\u2019s estate carefully, honored his charitable wishes, and refused to make financial decisions under pressure. Mark eventually returned to work, and we entered marriage counseling to confront the deeper problem of major decisions being made without mutual agreement.
