She enrolled at Los Angeles City College and supported herself with dishwashing and clerical jobs. A campus beauty contest led to a screen test, and MGM signed her in 1941, changing her name to Donna Reed.

During World War II, servicemen wrote to Reed from military posts and combat zones. She answered many of their letters and kept hundreds. Her screen image also took shape in roles that emphasized warmth and respectability.

From Bedford Falls to an Oscar

Frank Capra cast Reed as Mary Bailey opposite James Stewart in the 1946 film It’s a Wonderful Life. The movie’s status as a lasting holiday favorite developed over time, and Mary became one of Reed’s best-known roles. That recognition, however, could leave audiences with a narrow idea of her range.

In From Here to Eternity, Reed played Lorene, a nightclub hostess whose life was far removed from Mary Bailey’s. The role challenged her wholesome screen image and earned Reed the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Reed found another kind of influence on television. The Donna Reed Show, which ran from 1958 to 1966, put a mother at the center of a family sitcom. Beyond acting, Reed had substantial creative input, studied lighting and cinematography, and worked as an uncredited producer.

After the series ended, she stepped back from regular acting and became active in political causes. She worked with the anti-war group Another Mother for Peace, campaigned for Eugene McCarthy in 1968 and opposed nuclear power.

A contract dispute on Dallas

Reed’s final major role came in 1984, when she replaced Barbara Bel Geddes as Miss Ellie on Dallas. Bel Geddes later returned, and the producers dismissed Reed. Reed argued that her contract hired her to play Miss Ellie, not to serve as a temporary replacement, and filed a $7.5 million lawsuit against Lorimar Productions.

The parties settled out of court in August 1985. Reed was to receive her salary for the remaining two seasons covered by her contract and was released to accept other work. The settlement did not return the role to her, but addressed the contractual dispute.

In December 1985, doctors discovered Reed had pancreatic cancer. She died at home on January 14, 1986, aged 64, thirteen days before her 65th birthday. Her career left more than a familiar screen image: it showed a performer who sought influence behind the camera and stood by her understanding of an agreement.

DONNA REED’S FINAL ROLE LED TO A FIGHT OVER WHAT HER CONTRACT PROMISED.

For generations, many viewers knew Reed as Mary Bailey in *It’s a Wonderful Life*.
