Five weeks after The Judds released \u201cLove Can Build a Bridge\u201d in 1990, Naomi Judd announced that she had hepatitis C. The diagnosis threatened to end the mother-and-daughter duo\u2019s touring career just as their success appeared to be continuing at full force. Naomi was 44, and she later recalled that doctors could not assure her she would survive the illness.<\/p>\n

Since their breakthrough in 1984, Naomi and Wynonna had scored more than a dozen No. 1 country hits and become a major concert draw. Their rise from financial struggle to country stardom was bound up with their identity as a duo. Now Naomi\u2019s health meant that continuing to tour was no longer a safe assumption.<\/p>\n

Rather than quietly leave the stage, The Judds spent the following year on an extended farewell tour. The circumstances changed the stakes of each performance: audiences knew the duo might not return to their city. The tour concluded on December 4, 1991, with a nationally televised pay-per-view concert in Tennessee.<\/p>\n

The final show closed the partnership that had brought both women to prominence, but it also left Wynonna facing a question beyond what came next professionally. She later said she did not know who she was without her mother beside her. Naomi, meanwhile, encouraged her daughter to believe she was strong enough to continue on her own.<\/p>\n

Wynonna signed a solo recording deal and prepared her first album. The 1992 debut arrived with advance orders that reportedly exceeded those for The Judds\u2019 final album. It marked a new test for the singer who had long been heard as the voice at the center of the duo: could she carry a career on her own?<\/p>\n

The diagnosis had forced The Judds to stop while the act remained successful. Their farewell therefore became both an ending and the beginning of an uncertain transition. Naomi had to step away from touring, and Wynonna had to find her footing without the partnership that had defined her career.
