That tension helped make the song a turning point for the group in Britain after their post-\u201cWaterloo\u201d momentum had faltered.<\/p>\n<h2>From \u201cTurn Me On\u201d to \u201cSOS\u201d<\/h2>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/musicparadise.eatatsunset.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/ABBA_SOS_song_title_4a261274.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"max-width:100%;height:auto\"><\/figure>\n<p>ABBA recorded the backing track at Glenstudio, outside Stockholm, on 22 and 23 August 1974. At the time, the song was called \u201cTurn Me On.\u201d Manager Stig Anderson gave it the title \u201cSOS,\u201d while Bj\u00f6rn Ulvaeus almost entirely rewrote his first draft of the English lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>Benny Andersson played keyboards and Ulvaeus guitar, with Janne Schaffer, Mike Watson and Ola Brunkert contributing guitar, bass and drums. Agnetha F\u00e4ltskog sang the verses. After the initial track and vocal were recorded, Andersson and Ulvaeus added the guitar and synthesizer figures that introduce the song. Sound engineer Michael B. Tretow helped shape its layered production.<\/p>\n<p>The descending chords and shadowy keyboard sound bring unease to an arrangement that otherwise keeps moving with pop brightness. The lyric\u2019s narrator is asking for help as a relationship breaks down. F\u00e4ltskog\u2019s controlled vocal gives the plea an intimate quality, setting private distress against the song\u2019s polished surface.<\/p>\n<h2>Passed over, then released<\/h2>\n<p>The song\u2019s route to release was not immediate. After \u201cWaterloo,\u201d ABBA and their record companies selected \u201cSo Long\u201d as the next single, in part because it sounded closer to the Eurovision hit. \u201cSOS\u201d was passed over again when \u201cI Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do\u201d became the next single.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSOS\u201d eventually came out as the third single from the album <em>ABBA<\/em>, released in Scandinavia in June 1975 and in Britain that September. It reached No. 6 in the UK, the group\u2019s first major British hit since \u201cWaterloo.\u201d The single began a run of 18 consecutive UK Top Ten hits.<\/p>\n<p>Its success also reached far beyond Britain: \u201cSOS\u201d topped the charts in Australia, Belgium, Mexico, New Zealand and South Africa. The song brought together the elements that would define much of ABBA\u2019s pop: intricate keyboards, layered voices and precise craft, with a melody that lifts even as the lyric describes a painful ending.
