By January 1968, Johnny Cash was recording a live concert at Folsom State Prison. The performance that became At Folsom Prison<\/em> marked a major turn in his career\u2014but the months before it had brought him to a crisis he later described as a near-fatal encounter with addiction in Nickajack Cave.<\/p>\n

Cash said that in the fall of 1967 he drove from Nashville to the limestone cave near the Tennessee River. At the time, years of amphetamine and barbiturate use had left him physically worn down, his first marriage was collapsing, and arrests had compounded his troubles. In later accounts, he said he went into the cave intending not to return.<\/p>\n

He described crawling far underground before his flashlight batteries failed. In the darkness, he said, he came to believe that ending his life was not a choice he had the right to make. Cash then felt his way toward moving air and eventually reached daylight.<\/p>\n

A story with disputed details<\/h2>\n

The cave episode was absent from Cash\u2019s first autobiography, and later biographers questioned parts of its timeline. Cash nevertheless retold it in later years as a turning point in his struggle with addiction. The account is his recollection, rather than an episode whose details are fully settled.<\/p>\n

Cash later said June Carter and his mother were waiting outside. In the weeks that followed, June, Maybelle Carter and other family members helped him through withdrawal and tried to keep pills away from him. The source account stresses that recovery was neither straightforward nor permanent: Cash would struggle with drugs again later in life. But this period marked a change in direction.<\/p>\n

From the cave to Folsom<\/h2>\n

On January 13, 1968, Cash recorded the Folsom State Prison concert. At Folsom Prison<\/em> reached No. 1 on the country chart and revived a career that had been faltering amid addiction, damaged relationships and missed opportunities. The recording became one of the defining moments of his professional life.<\/p>\n

A few weeks after the concert, Cash proposed to Carter onstage in London, Ontario. They married in March 1968. The quick succession of a landmark album and a new marriage could make the period look like a clean break from his earlier troubles, but his later struggles complicate that picture.<\/p>\n

The Nickajack account remains partly disputed, and it cannot by itself explain Cash\u2019s recovery or career resurgence. What is clear from the chronology is that the cave story he later told came shortly before a consequential stretch: the Folsom recording, renewed career momentum and marriage to Carter. Cash\u2019s path was not a simple transformation, but Folsom became a lasting marker of his return to the stage.<\/p>\n
