All About Dolly Parton & Her Marriage To Her Mysterious Husband Carl Dean

May 30, 1966, was one of the most significant days in Dolly Parton’s life. That day, she married a man she’d been seeing for two years, a man by the name of Carl Dean.

The real story behind Dolly Parton's 'open' marriage to husband Carl Dean - as she is left heartbroken after his death aged 82 | Daily Mail Online

Parton and Dean married in Ringgold, Georgia, during a small ceremony with just the preacher, his wife, a witness, and Parton’s mama in attendance. The couple eloped to Georgia because Parton’s label had asked her to put their wedding on hold after she signed her contract with them.

Instead, Parton and Dean decided to marry in Georgia so that no one in Nashville would hear about their wedding.

Dean remained almost completely out of the spotlight throughout his nearly 59-year marriage to Parton. He was content to stay home while Parton traveled around the world for various performances and appearances.

Parton admitted that she and Dean were complete opposites. But she knew there wasn’t any other man in the world for her. She frequently spoke about him in interviews over the years and always had something kind to say about him.

When Dean passed away on March 3, 2025, at the age of 82, Parton said, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years.”

In honor of Carl Dean, we’ve gathered a list of seven of the sweetest things Parton has ever said about him. It’s clear how much she adored him.

7. Dolly Said Carl Dean Was A “God-Send”

During an interview on May 5, 2016 with CBN News, Parton spoke about why she and Dean made such a good pair. She called him a “God-send,” saying their different personalities balanced each other out.

God knew I was going to need somebody like him if I was going to be doing all this crazy stuff. But He knew he was going to need somebody like me because Carl is pretty much a loner and he really doesn’t want to be with anybody but me.”

6. Dolly Shares Her Secret To A Happy Marriage

When Parade asked Parton for her secret to a happy marriage with Carl Dean, she gladly explained. She said they worked well together because of their close friendship.

She also complimented Dean for being a “good man” and a good listener.

He loves to hear about the things I do. I love to hear about the things he does. So we enjoy each other’s company. We get along good. He’s got a great sense of humor. We’ve just been best buddies and best friends and, evidently, it’s working!”

5. Dolly Parton Had “Fun” Living Life With Husband Carl Dean

In an interview with People on May 3, 2016, Parton talked about why her relationship with Dean worked for so long. Although they couldn’t have been more different, Parton proved the term “opposites attract” applied to them.

We’re completely opposite, but that’s what makes it fun. I never know what he’s gonna say or do. He’s always surprising me.”

4. Dolly Knew She’d Never Find Anyone Else Like Her Husband

While speaking to Parade about Carl Dean, Parton discussed how he never got jealous, despite her global fame.

Parton said it was reassuring to see Dean feel so secure with himself, which made her love him even more.

He understands me, he gets me. He’s very secure within himself. He’s never been jealous. It’s a great compliment to me. This is his statement: ‘Well, hell, I know it’s not easy out there. I’d feel less about any man that didn’t fall in love with you.’ So that’s his attitude. Because of that, I realize I’d never find that again in anybody. He loves me and I love him.”

3. Carl Dean Did “Sweet Little Things” For Dolly Parton

When she wasn’t on the road, Parton enjoyed spending time at her Tennessee home with Dean. During an interview with Mirror, she spoke about how his small acts of kindness made her fall in love with him all over again.

It’s all about the sweet little things he does like picking flowers for me, making my coffee in the morning. He is incredibly thoughtful and we love each other for all the same reasons.”

2. Dolly And Her Husband Often Traveled Together

Parton and Dean often enjoyed going on small trips in their RV in Tennessee and the surrounding states.

While speaking to People about her husband in 2015, Parton talked about their vacations and the happiness they brought to her and Dean:

We like to get out in our little RV and just be simple. I love to read, I love to cook, I love to be with my husband. I put on my little comfy clothes – I call them my baby clothes – and we just relax.”

1. Dolly Parton Knew Her Marriage With Carl Dean Would Last

While speaking to Xpose about her marriage to Dean, Parton said she meant every word when she vowed to be with him “till death do us part.” She knew they would be together forever, something they proved by being married for nearly 59 years before his death.
