Veteran actor and rugged star of ‘Walking Tall” and Bond series, dies at 89

Joe Don Baker, the Texas-born actor known for his iconic role in Walking Tall and rare double turn in the James Bond franchise, has died at 89. He passed away on May 7, 2025, from lung cancer in Los Angeles, with news of his death confirmed a week later. With a screen career spanning five decades, Baker became a symbol of grit, justice, and quiet strength in American cinema.

Baker’s breakout came in 1973’s Walking Tall, where he played real-life sheriff Buford Pusser, transforming into an unlikely folk hero wielding a baseball bat for justice. The film’s success launched him into a series of tough-guy roles, including standout performances in Charley Varrick, Cape Fear, and Mud. He brought nuance to his characters—rugged, but never hollow.

In the James Bond universe, Baker made franchise history—first as villain Brad Whitaker in The Living Daylights, then as CIA ally Jack Wade in GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies. His unique ability to play both hero and foe highlighted his versatility and enduring screen presence.

Off-screen, Baker was known for his love of books, nature, and cats—a soft soul beneath the tough exterior. With over 50 film credits, a BAFTA-nominated TV role, and a legacy rooted in authenticity, Joe Don Baker leaves behind a body of work that commands respect and remembrance. Rest in peace to a true original.
