The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a warning to Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) following comments she made in defense of fellow Democratic lawmakers who clashed with ICE agents at a New Jersey detention center. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News that Ocasio-Cortez could face arrest if she engages in similar actions, such as trespassing or interfering with law enforcement duties at federal facilities.
This comes after Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested for trespassing at the Delaney Hall ICE detention center while attempting to join a Democratic delegation, including Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez Jr., and LaMonica McIver. ICE claims Baraka ignored multiple warnings and allegedly joined agitators trying to breach facility gates. AOC responded with a video warning that if federal agents “lay a finger” on her colleagues, “there will be a problem.”
DHS insists the lawmakers failed to follow protocols, stating they would have been granted a tour with 24 hours’ notice. The agency has also released bodycam footage and charged McIver with assaulting an agent. ICE defended its operations at the facility, citing that many detainees are suspected of serious crimes, including gang violence and terrorism.
The clash has reignited debate over congressional oversight versus federal enforcement, with DHS accusing Democrats of politicizing the situation and risking officer safety. Ocasio-Cortez has yet to respond directly to the arrest threat, but tensions between lawmakers and immigration authorities continue to escalate.
