The lyrics talk about different people facing heartbreak and tough times in their love lives. Lonesome Sue and Poor ol’ Jimmy are both dealing with their partners cheating on them, while the protagonist has been left by his partner for someone else. Despite the hardships, they all keep trying and persevering, even when they feel like crying or dying inside. The chorus repeats the phrase “On and on” to emphasize their determination to keep going.
