Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) says the Department of Justice has not responded to her inquiry on whether she’s under investigation. The inquiry stems from her “Know Your Rights” immigration webinar, which offered undocumented immigrants legal guidance on dealing with ICE.
Ocasio-Cortez has denied wrongdoing, calling the situation “politically motivated” and accusing Trump allies, including Border Czar Tom Homan, of trying to intimidate her for exercising free speech. In a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, she warned of DOJ “weaponization” against dissenting officials.
The controversy follows comments from Homan, who claimed to have contacted DOJ officials to raise concerns over her actions potentially impeding law enforcement. He has suggested legal consequences may follow.
While the DOJ has not confirmed an investigation, Ocasio-Cortez maintains that her outreach was legal and constitutionally protected, warning that targeting lawmakers for speech sets a dangerous precedent.
