Why this female worker wants to ditch her shirt and go topless

An Australian landscaper known as “The Bikini Tradie” has reignited debate over gender equality in workplace dress codes. Shianne Fox, based in Sydney, questioned why male tradies can work shirtless in 40°C heat while women are required to remain fully covered. In a viral TikTok video, she called the rule sexist and a double standard, saying she simply wants equal treatment under the same conditions.

Fox, who often wears a bikini top to cope with the heat, argues that toplessness shouldn’t be seen as inappropriate when male workers can go shirtless without issue. While many praised her for speaking out, others—including fellow female tradies—criticized her for potentially damaging the reputation of women in trades. Some argue her social media image undermines professional credibility in an already male-dominated industry.

Critics also point to safety regulations and public decency standards, saying that workplace dress codes exist for valid reasons. Differences in societal norms around male and female toplessness, they argue, should be acknowledged rather than challenged. Workplace decorum, especially in mixed-gender environments, remains a sticking point in the debate.

Despite the backlash, Fox stands by her advocacy, hoping to encourage more women to join the trades and help close the gender gap. Her viral protest raises broader questions about equality, professionalism, and shifting societal norms—reminding us that real progress often starts by challenging what’s long been accepted.
