James Carville Slams “The Squad” and Progressive Strategy
Democrat strategist James Carville criticized the influence of far-left lawmakers like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, arguing their activism is out of step with what it takes to win elections. In an interview with The Daily Beast, he mocked their “Fight Oligarchy” tour, calling it “counterproductive” and a poor reflection of the Democratic Party’s electoral strength.
Progressives Don’t Beat Republicans, Carville Argues
Carville pointed out that progressive leaders rarely, if ever, win races against Republicans, noting that many represent safe, heavily Democratic districts. He expressed frustration that media coverage often focuses on AOC and Bernie, rather than moderate Democrats like Sens. Tammy Baldwin or Jackie Rosen, who appeal to broader electorates.
Name Recognition Isn’t Enough
When asked about the benefits of their national profiles, Carville dismissed the idea that early visibility equals political viability. He argued the 2028 election is too far off to matter now and emphasized that Democrats shouldn’t rush to define their platform or candidates prematurely.
Winning Is the Only Goal
Carville ended by reaffirming that the “only noble purpose” in politics is winning elections. He said Democrats must focus on helping working people, not impressing media or pleasing activists. According to him, the party needs to shift attention away from loud personalities and toward effective, electable leaders.
