Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s federal trespassing charge has been officially dropped after an incident earlier this month at Delaney Hall, a privately run ICE facility in Newark. Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced the dismissal, saying it was made “for the sake of moving forward.” She also invited Baraka to tour the facility with her, assuring the public that “the government has nothing to conceal.”
Baraka, who is also running in the Democratic primary for governor, had entered the facility grounds with three congressional lawmakers during a protest as an ICE bus was arriving. DHS officials alleged that the group bypassed security and entered through open gates without authorization.
While Baraka’s case has been closed, Representative LaMonica McIver now faces charges of allegedly assaulting and interfering with law enforcement. A judge will determine when she must turn herself in. Baraka publicly defended McIver, calling her “a dear friend” and expressing confidence that she will be vindicated.
The incident has stirred political tension in Newark and raised questions about public officials’ conduct and accountability. DHS emphasized that elected status does not place individuals above the law, while Baraka reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring Delaney Hall follows local regulations and treats inmates humanely.
