A Georgia family’s birthday celebration turned into heartbreak when nine-year-old Emily Grace Mayo never arrived. On May 27, 2025, police found Emily’s body in the backseat of a car at Brooklet City Park, with a gunshot wound. In the front seat was her father, James Lee Mayo, dead from a self-inflicted shot. A handgun was found on his lap.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed their involvement, and an autopsy was scheduled. Emily’s family was devastated. Her aunt, Amber Healy, started a GoFundMe that quickly surpassed its goal, describing Emily as joyful, bright, and full of life. “He was supposed to bring her to a birthday party,” Amber wrote. “Instead, he took her from us.”
Emily had just finished third grade and was excited for the future. Her music teacher shared that just days earlier, Emily sang “Party in the USA” during a school karaoke event. Her kindness, humor, and energy left an impact on everyone who knew her.
The community plans a candlelight vigil in her memory, while the investigation continues. Emily’s family, especially her mother and younger sister, are leaning on support from friends and neighbors. The family made it clear: they mourn Emily deeply—but not the man who took her life.
